A common challenge for university-based sustainability science programs is amply rewarding faculty for their work. The traditional publication-focused tenure structure often does not value working across departments or building partnerships with community organizations or NGOs. This space is dedicated to identifying strategies to reward faculty for this interdisciplinary teaching and research.
Some of the strategies identified at the 2009 Forum for Sustainability Science Programs
in Chicago included:
- Writing interdisciplinary teaching into new faculty positions (often part of sustainability strategy)
- Offering small grants for course development
