Background: Increased agricultural
productivity is a major stepping stone on the path out of poverty, but farmers
in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia face
tremendous challenges improving production. The National Research Council report
Emerging Technologies to Benefit Farmers in
Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia (2008) identifies 60 emerging innovations in science and technology that
have the potential to improve agricultural productivity in these two
regions. This study was requested by the Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation. Eighteen technologies are recommended for immediate
development and further exploration. At this
event, members of the study committee will highlight four of the recommended technologies
and engage respondents and members of the
public in a discussion of the prospects for their development. Please see
the attached report brief and program agenda for further information.
